About Us

Mission
The Office of Diversity and Inclusion fosters dignity and respect ensuring that all members of the HWS community have an equal opportunity to thrive.

Diversity Statement
At Hobart and William Smith Colleges we strive to create a just and inclusive environment where all students, faculty and staff are valued and respected. We believe that diversity in identity and perspective enriches our community and prepares us all to lead lives of consequence. We recognize that historical practices and policies have privileged certain groups while excluding others from institutions of higher education, and thus the work of diversity at HWS seeks to account for those inequities by promoting college access and working to ensure that every member of the HWS community has an equal opportunity to thrive.

Interim Chief Diversity Officer

Solomé Rose
In 2016, Rose was named Interim Chief Diversity Officer responsible for launching the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Her first initiative was leading an HWS-wide effort to develop a strategic diversity plan for the Colleges. Previously, she managed global and community leadership programs in the HWS Centennial Center for Leadership and worked with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation coordinating HIV programs in India and Malawi. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia, majoring in Foreign Affairs and African American studies and has a master’s degree in Public Policy from George Mason University. Solome, who identifies as a “third culture kid,” is an Ethiopian American, raised in Cote d’Ivoire and Oman.
