IT'S EASY BEING GREEN

Living Green

Building a Green Machine
  • Wash your clothes on a cold cycle; there are even special detergents for cold washing.

  • After washing on a cold cycle, hang dry your clothes.

  • Do not prop open exterior doors. In addition to being unsafe, open doors let cold air in during the winter requiring more from the heaters.

  • Turn your monitor off when you are not using it.

  • Turn out the lights when leaving the room.

  • Buy a corded-phone for your room that does not need an electrical outlet.

  • Print on both sides of the paper or multiple pages per sheet.

  • Unplug any charging devices when they are not in use. Although they are not charging something, they still use power while sitting idle.

  • Buy a carbon offset for your dorm room. An offset is an investment of energy costs in energy efficiency projects that absorbs or prevents the release of carbon dioxide. It means that the carbon emitted from your dorm room is not emitted somewhere else. This can be done by investing in clean technologies, CO2 sequestration, or a variety of other ways. Since Green House Gases affect everyone, it does not matter where you purchase the offset. You can purchase a terra pass to offset your carbon emissions.

Eating Green

  • In Saga, take only the number of napkins you need per meal.

  • Take only one cup for each beverage purchase.

  • Use paper bags for carryout, where provided.

  • Recycle aluminum cans throughout campus at the designated recycling stations as well as at home.

  • Dine in rather than carrying out.

Recycling

  • Request a recycling bin from Buildings and Grounds (B&G).

  • Use the no-sort recycling on campus and toss all of your recyclables into one bin! Not sure what's okay to recycle? Here's a list:

    • Cardboard
    • Paper (white and colored)
    • Magazines
    • Newspaper
    • File Folders
    • Aluminum Cans
    • Tin Cans
    • Glass Bottles
    • Plastic Bottles
    • Paper Coffee Cups
  • If you are throwing away a broken TV, radio, computer or other electronic device, contact B&G to have them pick it up and dispose of it properly. Many electronic devices can be salvaged for metals and circuit boards that can be used by people in developing countries.

  • Batteries also need to be disposed of properly, they can be dropped off at B&G or by giving them to your housekeepers.

The Climate Commitment

This Environmental Commitment provides a framework and support for more than 674 of America's colleges and universities to go carbon neutral. The signatories of the Commitment pledge to fulfill a three-step constitution which includes expediently initiating a comprehensive plan for climate neutrality, taking tangible action to reduce greenhouse gases, and publicizing the action plan, inventory and progress. The Commitment recognizes the unique responsibility that institutions of higher education have as role models for their communities and in training the people who will develop the social, economic and technological solutions to reverse climate change.
